Adaptosir - Trisport Pharma

  • Ensures that the body is quickly restored to a state of balance or homeostasis after the training session or competition.
  • Encourages the body to produce muscle building hormones (= anabolic affect).
  • Curbs the production of muscle breakdown hormones (= anti‐catabolic).
  • Adaptogenes, anti‐stress agents or tonics.
  • The term “adaptogene” refers to the capacity of the body to provide resistance during stress situations and to recover from its inner state of unrest or heavy physical effort.

An adaptogene must satisfy three conditions:
1) It must induce an aspecific resistance to physical, chemical and biological stress factors.
2) It must have a normalizing effect and promote homeostasis.
3) It must be safe (non‐toxic) and have as little influence as possible on the normal bodily functions.

Clinical research increasingly shows that their effect is based on the “modulation” of the hypothalamus ‐ hypophysis ‐ adrenal glands, a system which is upset by persistent physical or mental stress situations. As a result of this, the adrenal glands become highly stressed and, as we know, they are responsible for the production of corticosteroids such as DHEA and testosterone.

Furthermore, it also appears that adaptogenes activate hexokinase. Hexokinase is the enzyme which phosphorylates glucose into glucose ‐ 6 ‐ phosphate.

This reaction is the first step in glycolysis, a process by which glucose is broken down to release energy.

Some important adaptogenes:

Lepidium meyenii or Maca: Maca is well‐known for its vitalizing properties. Maca also contains a high level of sterols (0.05% to 0.1%) and that is also why it is taken by sportspeople involved in strength sports, as an alternative to anabolic steroids.

Rhodiola rosea: Rhodiola rosea is one of the most important and most studied “adaptogenetic” plants. The dried extract of the root contains polyphenols, of which rosavine and salidroside are the most important, active substances.

In a recent, double‐blind, randomized and placebo‐controlled study carried out in the “Laboratory for Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics” of the KU Leuven, the researchers concluded that:

Acute Rhodiola rosea intake improved the stamina (= time until exhaustion) and the VO2 max in healthy volunteers.

Phosphatidylserine (90%):

After an intensive training period, most sportspeople have lower levels of testosterone and increased cortisol levels, which can lead to muscle breakdown and possibly to overtraining.

Also, the increased ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) concentration after the training session or competition leads to higher cortisol levels and an unbalanced cortisol/testosterone ratio.

Various studies show that supplementation of phosphatidylserine before the training session or competition reduces both the ACTH as well as cortisol concentrations. A study done at the Sports Science department of the University of Wales reveals that phosphatidylserine can have an ergogenetic (= performance enhancing) effect in racing cyclists.
